Causes

As humans urbanize more we are directly effecting the environment around us. As human development progressed the outcome of our actions should have been at the forefront of issues discussed. Public consciousness of environmental issues must be greatly increased. Unfortunately, major environmental disasters must usually occur in order for issues to come to light.

Here is a figure visualizing the urbanization of the Pacific Northwest. Urbanization and pollution go hand in hand. The message to take from this is that we are directly polluting our beautiful sound.

Laying down concrete causes less water to be absorbed into the soil and produces more surface runoff. It also causes a decrease in the amount of evapotranspiration that should naturally occur. It is imperative to decrease the amount of concrete and surface runoff and have more natural cover.

Our Earth is being polluted by the human beings that walk on it. A lot of the pollution in the Puget Sound is from vehicles that we drive every day. The roads are polluted with wastes from the vehicles. These pollutants are being carried into our rivers and oceans.
